Doing Business in Europe

The Brexit debate has made me realise the extent to which our technology companies tend to focus on the American market for sales, finance and exit opportunities rather than the European market which is (still) our home market. I had a very interesting meeting with Dr Carsten Rudolph, the Director of www.baystartup.de the other day. It was very interesting to compare notes on the start-up scene in the UK and Germany. We face similar challenges, particularly with access to later stage finance but we both agreed that there ought to be more we can do to encourage our technology companies to...

R&D Tax Credits

Over the years I have written numerous blogs and articles about financing high growth companies covering debt, equity and crowdfunding. However, I have never touched on R&D Tax Credits which I have always assumed are the preserve of accountants. Eyejusters

I remember listening to the Reverend Richard Holloway, the Bishop of Edinburgh, delivering a sermon in St Giles Cathedral to mark the opening of the Edinburgh Science Festival. His opening line was:-“every day I thank God for technology because I wake up, reach out my hand for my spectacles which I left on my bedside table overnight and put them on so that I can see”Millions of people in the developed world are able to see to read, work and generally enjoy fulfilling lives because of spectacles which we all take for granted. However, there are also many hundreds of millions and...

Your Impact as an Entrepreneur as a Leader Make sure your team are with you on the journey

Having the privilege to work with Entrepreneurial Leaders as they grow their businesses is inspiring, challenging and always interesting. Whether working one to one with leaders on their own development, supporting the building and development of their team, facilitating and coaching leadership development or developing growth strategies. In Scotland just now we have a thriving entrepreneurial eco system to support businesses from start-up to growth and then scaling their business, which I am very proud to be part of. I thought it may be helpful to share some of the common challenges I find entrepreneurial leaders face when growing their business and some of the feedback I hear...
