GDPR News – 26/6/18

  1. The European Data Protection Board (EDPB) has published draft guidelineson certification and identifying certification criteria in accordance with Articles 42 and 43 of the Regulation 2016/679 for consultation. This consultation will end on 12 July.
  1. In the news: BT have been fined £77,000 by the ICO for sending out 5 million spam emails. Customers had not consented to receive the direct marketing emails in breach of the Privacy and Electronic Communications Regulations.
  1. The Department for Culture, Media and Sport has launched a consultation on data protection fee payments or more specifically the exemptions from paying the fees. The aim of the consultation is to help decide whether the exemptions are working – whether they should be removed or if any new exemptions are required.
  1. The ICO has written a blog post discussing their introduction of the “Age Appropriate Design Code” – informing those in the games and social media industries what is expected of them in terms of protecting the privacy of children using their services and goods.
  1. In the news: The Gloucestershire Police have been fined £80,000 by the ICO for revealing the identities of abuse victims in a bulk email sent and shared with many victims, witnesses, lawyers and journalists.
