Investing Women Conference – Ambition and Growth – 7/8 March 2016

Last year MBM Commercial welcomed Jackie Waring of Investing Women to be part of the panel for our event in honour on Women’s Entrepreneurship Day on 19th November, which we hosted in partnership with specialist recruiters Eden Scott. Jackie was joined on the panel by Vicky Brock (CEO of Clear Returns) , Margaret Gibson (CEO of Women’s Enterprise Scotland), Michelle Lownie (founding Director of Eden Scott) and Co-founder of TC Biopharm Mike Leek, all chaired by CEO of Entrepreneurial Scotland, Sandy Kennedy. The discussion was lively and covered a wide range of topics – from the issues of working in and on your own business, inspiring schoolgirls to aim higher, to breaking down barriers at board level for women – with lots of participation from the audience.

Since meeting Jackie at the event, she has told me more about Investing Women. The organisation does what it says on the tin and is a growing community of women angel investors, women entrepreneurs seeking growth, and those who want to help both. Investing Women’s usual range of investment is between £50,000 and £250,000 of seed capital in early stage ventures in Scotland but will look at much larger investments, collaborating with other angel groups where necessary. The organisation has recently invested in TC BioPharm, a company based in Edinburgh and Glasgow developing products to significantly improve cancer patients’ quality of life and Nano-Lit Technologies, which develops innovative technology in LED lighting and leading laser manufacturer Chromacity.

Investing Women is hosting its first conference - Ambition & Growth’ on the 7th and 8th of March this year at Dynamic Earth, Edinburgh, with some fantastic key speakers (including Susan Preston, referred to as the ‘USA’s first lady of women angels’; Lesley Eccles from Scotland’s unicorn company, Fan Duel; Lena Wilson, CEO of Scottish Enterprise; as well as other innovative sessions led by global organisation Start-Up Grind). There will also be masterclasses, workshops and one to one clinics designed to inspire the ambition and growth of female entrepreneurs, angels and professionals as well as share tangible growth strategy ‘know-how’. The conference is the first of its kind in Scotland and will bring together Scottish women entrepreneurs and supporting angel investors for a two-day event. There’ll be a “stellar” line up dinner at Edinburgh Castle on the 7th of March when the winner of Scotland’s only pitch competition for women-led companies, ‘AccelerateHER’ will be announced.
