MBM step up their Corporate Social Responsibility efforts

It’s been a busy year for MBM across the board, but in amongst the fee earning work, we’ve found time to extend our charity fund-raising efforts in 2016: hosting a packed charity dinner for Maggie’s Centre in Edinburgh in March; entering two teams in the Stirling Triathlon on 5th June, to raise funds for The Yard; and signing up for gardening and landscaping help for the charity “It’s good to Give” in September.

Maggie’s Centres offers free practical, emotional and social support to people with cancer and their families and friends. Help is offered freely to anyone with any type of cancer, and patients and families are encouraged to drop-in at any time. The centres provide practical, emotional and social support, and all are designed so that the kitchen table is at the heart of each centre, a place where people can sit and chat, or take some time over a quiet cup of tea. In addition, Maggie’s help people with cancer to get together and share their experiences, whilst providing practical help and advice on a wide range of issues.

In March of this year the Dispute Resolution Team were delighted to have the opportunity to host a charity fundraising dinner for Maggie’s Edinburgh in MBM’s boardroom, with guests of honour Andy Anderson, the centre head, and Mark Cooper, head of fundraising in Edinburgh - https://www.maggiescentres.org/our-centres/maggies-edinburgh/meet-the-team/ . A packed room heard from Andy, on the work that the centre does, and was also treated to a fascinating talk from Mark who completed a run from Amsterdam to Barcelona in memory of his mother in 2010, and who has since gone on to motivational speaking, ultra running, expedition consultancy and fundraising -   http://www.runwithmark.com/. His talk focussed particularly on what motivated him to take up running as an unfit smoker, and how he has managed to turn his life around through running challenges. Guests said: “thank you for organising such a, genuinely, inspiring evening….Very worthwhile cause and truly inspirational speakers.  Mark Cooper was fabulous.   I just need to look out my running shoes!!!”… “a truly inspirational evening which really makes you think.”….Another commented: “I can only echo your words about Maggies – my sister is currently receiving treatment for cancer and in the Western for treatment and they have been a fantastic support for her and the family”. After a successful raffle and silent auction, the total raised by MBM for this most worthwhile of causes was nearly £3000.

With the onset of spring, we turned our attention to outdoor pursuits, and entered two teams, one from Corporate, and the other from Dispute Resolution, in the Stirling Triathlon  on 5th June to fund-raise for The Yard, a purpose built indoor and outdoor adventure playground for children and young people with disabilities, providing a safe environment where children and young people can experience play without feeling different. The Yard run family, school and club sessions in the heart of Edinburgh, and provide invaluable support for families as well as the children who come to the Yard - http://www.theyardscotland.org.uk.

As part of the teams’ fundraising endeavours, they organised a hugely successful charity quiz night at the end of April, hosted at the Yard itself, and with a film on the work of the Yard, and a short talk from the dedicated staff, guests were left in no doubt as to the invaluable assistance the Yard provides. At the end of a great evening, we had managed to raise £1925. With a very successful bake sale a few weeks later, the total has risen to £2065, and the justgiving page is still open: https://www.justgiving.com/fundraising/Cat-Maclean2.

Finally, in September of this year, we are planning a firm-wide initiative for the charity, “It’s Good to Give” - , http://www.itsgood2give.co.uk/  which supports young cancer patients and their families in Scotland. The charity are building a Respite centre, the Ripple Retreat, http://www.itsgood2give.co.uk/the-ripple-retreat/ near Loch Vennacher in the Trossachs, with the foundations now in place, and building taking place over the summer, and MBM Commercial are all set to provide a squad of gardeners in early September to help with the landscaping of the centre once building is completed. Lynne McNicoll, co-founder of the charity, took to Twitter to publicly thank MBM for their contribution to making the centre a huge success.

We look forward to making 2017 just as successful a year for charity fundraising!
