Julie joined MBM as a trainee in 2012 after a successful career in life sciences which included post-doctoral positions at Edinburgh and Harvard Universities. While a trainee at MBM, Julie mainly trained in IP and Commercial Contracts, gaining experience across a wide sector including e-commerce, data protection and licensing IP rights.
Because of her life science background, Julie became involved in some corporate transactions with life science companies also.
Julie was a finalist for Trainee of the Year at the Law Awards of Scotland 2014.
After qualifying as a solicitor Julie became a permanent member of the IP and Commercial Contracts team at MBM, but continues to support to the firm’s corporate team. Julie’s corporate work includes private equity investments and EMI option agreements. She has a particular focus on investment in early stage life science companies.
Shortly after qualifying Julie was seconded to ERI to assist their in house contracts team. During this six month secondment Julie dealt with a wide range of contracts both academic and commercial. Following on from this secondment Julie provided assistance to the Roslin Institute initially for one day a week, which expanded to covering all the legal requirements of the Institute for a three month period.
Out with her legal work at MBM Julie actively engages with staff at several bio incubators which has led to MBM becoming a corporate partner at BioCity Scotland. Julie is very enthusiastic mentor of entrepreneurs, and participates in an advisory board for RSE fellows.
Julie is a very active Tweeter and blogger for MBM, covering topics on life sciences and IP, and supporting entrepreneurs online. Through her blogs Julie has been interviewed for radio and featured on Scottish Legal News.
Julie also works with the LAUNCH.ed legal clinic providing advice to student entrepreneurs on a pro bono basis.
