The Shattered Wine Glass

Posted on Jan 31, 2011 by Sandy Finlayson  | 0 Comments

The private sector economy in Scotland is, or has been, a Classic Wine Glass. The bowl at the top has been filled with major corporates such as RBS, HBOS, Scottish Power, British Energy and S&N. This large and heavy bowl has been supported by a very wide base of small lifestyle businesses and a very thin fragile stem of growth companies. Now that we have spilled most of the value out of the bowl, we must ask ourselves what we can do to fill it again with the next generation of large businesses. This can only happen by developing more successful growth companies in the stem. We have enormous challenges to develop such companies when access to capital and bank finance is so tight. However, if we are to secure the future we must be prepared to make the investment today in the new wealth creating companies of tomorrow. You do not need to be a rocket scientist to work out why the BRIC economies are able to achieve 8/10% compound growth. They are creating and investing lots of new businesses – meanwhile, we “re-arrange the deck chairs on the Titantic” by constantly re-circulating assets round the aftermarket. Should our financial engineers be trading in synthetic CDO2s when investing in the future? – it’s your pension money they are playing with! Sandy Finlayson Senior Partner
