An Inspiring Event

This year’s UK Business Angels Association Conference was an inspiring and uplifting event in the wonderful city of Liverpool.  Sadly I did not find time to take the ferry across the Mersey, tour the art galleries or the maritime museum although I did find time to briefly explore the waterfront.

For me the highlights of the Conference were:-

  • The Gala Dinner in the Anglican Cathedral, the fifth largest cathedral in the world.  We were summoned to dinner by the mighty organ and felt the air vibrating with the sound.  There were many worthy nominees for the awards and the keynote address was delivered by Sir Terry Leahy who talked about his journey from building up and running one of the world’s most successful retailers to becoming a successful Business Angel.  He invests in things he understands which seemed like remarkably sound advice.
  • There were lots of interesting speakers and panel sessions with the themes of “Connecting Globally” and “Investing in World Class Businesses”.

If there was ever any doubt about whether crowdfunding was with us to stay, the participants on the crowdfunding panel must surely have dispelled that doubt.

Nicola Horlick, who in a previous life was one of the highest profile and most successful investment managers in the City, talked about her new crowdfunding platform – www.moneyandco.com which successfully raised £1 Million for its first customer a few days after it launched.  Bob Wigley, who was previously the Chairman of Merrill Lynch and has served on the Court of the Bank of England was there in his capacity as Chairman of www.justinvesting.com.  If crowdfunding is now starting to attract such high profile City figures the world really has moved on.
